Health 1

This only applies to herds on the relevant service.

These notes are intended as a guide to complete the Health 1 section.

GENERAL HEALTH STATUS

Record the number of individual cases for each condition. You may well already record these 'events' within your existing Herd Management Package.

Milk Fever
Record when a cow suffering from milk fever requires proactive intervention, typically administer a bottle of calcium.

Do not include preventative treatments, such as when a bottle of calcium is administered to, say an older cow that is considered a high milk fever risk.

Displaced Abomasums
When a displaced abomasum requires re-setting.

Difficult Calvings
A difficult calving where the vet was called to assist or where 'prolonged' farmer assistance is required using a calving jack.

Retained Cleansings
Where the placenta has not been expelled within 24 hours of calving.

Abortions
Record 'classical' late abortions where a foetus was seen. Do not include early abortions / re-absorptions.

Injuries
An accidental injury to a cow that requires treatment or the cow to be culled. This should include injuries at calving or damage to teats.

Metritis
A uterine infection including 'classical' Metritis and Endometritis (whites).

MASTITIS
Mastitis - New
The number of 'new' cases of mastitis that require antibiotic treatment. If a cow has 2 or more quarters infected with mastitis at the same time, this should be considered as the same case.

This should include the treatment of cows with a quarter identified with a high cell count, even if definite 'clots' are not present.

This should also include cases of Summer Mastitis.

Mastitis - Repeat case

A repeat mastitis case is where a cow has 2 or more cases of mastitis in the same lactation.

Number of Mastitis Tubes Used

The total number of antibiotic tubes used for mastitis treatments within the recording period.

This should not include dry cow tubes.

Number of Mastitis cases seen by Vet

The number of cases that require treatment by a vet

Cell Count
The number of cows that have a recorded cell count within each of the cell count bands. Take these details from the latest milk recording within the period.
